The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of James Lawrence can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Obituary for James Edward Lawrence

"If I can leave someone with a smile on their face, then I have done my job!"

Whether the topic was genealogy, the history of North Vancouver, stamp collecting, bowling or his beloved Toronto Blue Jays, Jim was happy to share his knowledge with anyone willing to listen. He loved to make new friends wherever he went, especially if a good conversation, a good game of cribbage, or a big bowl of vanilla ice cream was involved.

Beginning in the early 1940's, Jim spent decades working for Woodward's department stores, in Port Alberni, Penticton and Downtown Vancouver. He strongly believed in service to the community, and was a long-time member of the Lions Club. In later years, Jim was enthusiastically involved with the North Vancouver Museum and Archives.

Jim spent his final year enjoying the beautiful Astoria Retirement Residence in Port Coquitlam. For the better part of last 3 months, he also appreciated the care and attention of the staff of Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody.

In the early hours of May 16, 2017, at the age of 88, Jim peacefully passed away. We are certain his lovely wife, Beth, was there in heaven to welcome him. Jim is survived by his brother and sister, his children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Jim's family would like to express their heart-filled gratitude to the wonderful staff of Astoria, as well as the incredible care team at Eagle Ridge Hospital - their gentleness, humour and respect were a gift in these final weeks. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation.
